NDSU Expert Quoted in The New York Times on Trade-Related Impacts to U.S. Agriculture
A recent New York Times article titled “Trump Promises Farmers $12 Billion to Blunt Fallout From His Trade War” includes expert commentary from Dr. Shawn Arita, Senior Research Economist at North Dakota State University and the NDSU Agricultural Risk Policy Center (ARPC).
According to the article, Agricultural Risk Policy Center (ARPC) estimates that crop producers will lose between $35 billion and $43 billion on the most recent harvest, reflecting the combined effects of trade disruptions, rising input costs, high interest rates, and commodity prices that remain below production costs.
Key insights highlighted in the article include:
• Retaliatory trade actions have significantly reduced export demand for U.S. crops, especially soybeans.
• Federal assistance payments are expected to offset only a portion of total producer losses.
• Rising production costs and borrowing expenses continue to pressure farm profitability.
• Financial stress across the farm sector remains elevated despite short-term support measures.
